Why it is prescribed (Indications) : 

This medication is a synthetic prostaglandin analogue, prescribed for termination of pregnancy and also used for postpartum hemorrhage.  It induces uterine muscle contractions and can trigger abortion in early pregnancy. 

When it is not to be taken (Contraindications): 

Contraindicated in patients with pelvic inflammatory disease, heart, lung, liver or kidney disease, hypersensitivity.

Animal reproduction studies have shown an adverse effect on the fetus and there are no adequate and well-controlled studies in humans, but potential benefits may warrant use of the drug in pregnant women despite potential risks.

Dosage & When it is to be taken : 

Adult: IM Pregnancy termination in the 2nd trimester 250 mcg, repeat at 1.5-3.5-hrly depending on response. Max: 12 mg. Postpartum hemorrhage 250 mcg at 15-90 min intervals.

It comes as a solution for injection to be administered by a healthcare provider. 

Warnings and Precautions : 

Caution should be exercised in patients with history of heart /lung disorders, increased eye pressure, asthma, epilepsy, severe liver or kidney dysfunction, high/low blood pressure, diabetes, during pregnancy and lactation.
It may cause dizziness or drowsiness, do not drive a car or operate machinery while taking this medication.

Side Effects : 


  Most Common
- Nausea, vomiting, diarrhea and excessive uterine bleeding.

  Less Common
- Abdominal pain, flushing, shivering, headache, dizziness, hypotension, fever/chills, difficulty in breathing and lung swelling.

Other Precautions : 

Take full course of treatment.

Intramuscular: Refrigerate at 2-8°C.
